Awana Club Frequently Asked Questions
If you do not find the answer to your question from the list below, please contact us. We would be glad to hear from you and to answers any of your questions.
My child just started Awana, what do I do first?
Find out where to drop off your child each week and where to pick him/her up. Make sure he/she understands the plan. Keep track of our calendar and schedule so your child will be able to participate in each special event.
What does my child do first?
All children start in an entrance booklet to learn the basics for their club. This booklet takes about three weeks to complete. After finishing the entrance booklet, the child receives a membership card to the club. It is not necessary to pay the registration fees until your child has completed the entrance booklet.
Who’s in charge?
Keith Watson is the Awana Commander for clubs from three-years-old through sixth grade and Amy Watson is the Assistant to the Commander. Alice Johnson and Debbie Nicholas are the Awana Administrative Secretaries and they handle all the ordering of Awana materials.
How do I know what’s going on week to week?
Announcements are made at the beginning and end of each Awana meeting. When you pick up your child, ask if anything new is coming up. Occasionally, we will also send fliers home with the kids to announce special events.
Who’s going to teach my child all of these Bible verses?
God, with a little help from you. Take part in helping your child learn his/her memory verse. Children learn verses “for keeps” if they study them a few minutes each day rather than cramming at the last moment. As parents we are responsible for placing God’s Word on their hearts. Go over each verse, explaining the meaning of the verse so your child understands what God is saying.
What Bible version is used?
Awana International materials comes in either the Kings James, NIV, or New Kings James version. For our Awana Clubs, we order material from the New Kings James version. If you would like your child to learn and memorize Bible verses from another version, please write out the verses for the leaders to use.
How many sections should my child pass each week?
It depends on several things: 1) How much time is available to listen to each clubber during Handbook time. A very large club may cause there to be a limit on how many sections a clubber may recite during one night (parents, this is why we need your help in volunteering as leaders or listeners). 2) How much time and effort you and your child want to dedicate each week for memorization. 3) How motivated you child is to do the work. Is it fun to do? Yes! Our goal is to teach children the Word of God in a way the is enjoyable to them. We want to encourage and motivate them to do their best without setting goals so high that we take away the joy of memorizing God’s Word or gloss over the verses without permitting them sink into their heart.
How many book should my child pass each year?
If your child passes one handbook a year, he/she will get the big awards. Cubbies who complete the Hopper and Jumper books in two years get the special Cubbies trophy. Sparkies who finish the Skipper, Hiker, and Climber books in three years earn the Sparks plaque. Kids from our 3rd through 6th Grade T&T Clubs who pass two handbooks in two years get the Excellence Trophy. 5th & 6th Graders who pass two more handbooks in the next two years earn the Timothy Trophy. Awana has lots of extra credit work such as reviews, workbooks, and memory packets. However, the basic expectation is one book per year.
What if my child finishes his/her handbook early?
The clubs at various grade levels have reviews, workbooks, and advanced memorization projects. Of course there is also the rest of the Bible. Some clubbers go on to memorize whole chapters of Scripture.
Can children pass sections outside of club?
No, that would be unfair to children who do not have access to leaders throughout the week. So we ask that kids pass their sections only at their Awana Club.
Can children pass sections during the summer?
Yes and no. Clubbers are encourage to make-up incomplete work from previous years; however, they may not sections in future handbooks.
What are Awana Bucks?
Awana Bucks are the official currency of Awana Clubs at Community Bible Church. Kids earn Awana Bucks for every section they pass. The Awana Store is where the kids get to spend their hard-earned bucks. The Awana Store stocked with some great gifts and will be open before certain club meetings as indicated on our Awana Club Calendar.
